General information about course counselling

In the course of his studies every student is confronted with the challenge to make meaningful choices which courses to select that the university offers. For the first orientation, the individual institutes have developed course specializations between which the students can freely decide. Furthermore, there is one course advisor per institute who will assist the students with questions.

In order for the counselling sessions to be succesful for both the student and the course advisor, here are some tips on course counselling:

When should i take advantage of course counselling?

The binding individual study plan must be signed by the course advisor and submitted to the examination committee before the Master's thesis is started. So that you, as a student, can be sure that the responsible course advisor also signs your self-created study plan, it is advisable to clarify your desired study with the advisor beforehand. That ideally, you should plan your further course of studies before you hear the first elective lecture and discuss this with the course advisor.

Why creating a preliminary study plan?

A preliminary study plan signed by the course advisor will ensure that your further study planning is meaningful and goal-oriented. Of course, the preliminary study plan can be changed at any time. Also, a change to another course specialization is possible if the advisor of the other course specialization approves.

What should I do before going to the course advisor?

The most efficient is a course counselling, if you bring your desired study plan as a basis for discussion, or prepare this as far as possible.

Here are some questions you should ask yourself when working out your course scheme:

  • In which specialist field I want to become active later?
  • What skills / knowledge do need for this?
  • What possibilities of self-organization offer me the examination regulations and the course scheme?
  • Which lectures / laboratories give me this knowledge?
  • Which course specialization allows me to hear as much of this content as possible?
  • How do I arrange my remaining studies temporally? When do I hear which lecture or when do do my industrial internship?
