Information on the practical course

Contents of the Lab

For quality control of technically manufactured objects and their surfaces, a wide range of different measurement methods and systems can be applied. Examples include white light interferometry, confocal microscopy, and systems based on focus variation. These measurement methods and systems naturally differ not only with respect to the physical measurement principle used, but also in terms of how the captured raw sensor data are processed.

In this lab course, different systems for the metrological acquisition of (technical) surfaces will be presented and characterized with regard to their properties. During the experiment sessions, students will independently develop procedures and algorithms for processing sensor data in order to derive information about the desired geometric and/or optical properties of the examined surfaces. The developed algorithms will be evaluated using sensor data from sample objects and characterized in terms of the quality of the measurement results obtained.

The Laboratory Mechatronic Measurement Systems currently comprises three experiments, each of which is to be worked on independently across three experiment sessions:

Confocal Microscopy, Light Field Cameras and Defect Detection with Neural Networks

Registration

Due to the fixed number of experimental setups and the maximum group sizes, the number of participants is limited. Therefore, participation is only possible after timely registration. Registration takes place by email to Johannes Steffens. Please provide your matriculation number, preferred time slot, and, if applicable, your lab partner. An effort will be made to take preferences into account when assigning groups.

Experiment Dates

The experiments take place on Wednesdays from 13:00 to 17:00. The lab course takes place at Campus West in our lab rooms on the 3rd floor of the IIIT (Building 30.35, Room 303), Hertzstr. 16. Attendance is mandatory for all experiments.
In case of illness, an alternative date is available.

Examination Information

Assessment will be in the form of a written exam lasting 120 minutes, according to § 4 Abs. 2 No. 1 SPO Master 2015. If there are fewer than 20 examinees, an oral exam of approx. 20 minutes may take place instead, according to § 4 Abs. 2 No. 2 SPO Master 2015.
The module grade corresponds to the grade of the written or oral exam.

The time and location of the exam will be announced in ILIAS.
