Gasoline Direct Injection

The latest exhaust emission standards for internal combustion engines force car manufacturers and suppliers to develop cleaner and more fuel-efficient technologies. The increasing demands call for the optimization of the combustion process. To meet his challenge, a precise fuel metering is essential. In this research project, an algorithm was designed for calibrating the high-pressure fuel injection valves by using the standard knock sensor. The algorithm determines the actual duration of injection on basis of the emitted structure- borne sound. With this information, each fuel injection valve can be calibrated for compensating manufacturing dispersions as well as maintaining a stable operating behaviour during the entire lifetime.

Research Objectives:

  • Calibration of solenoid injectors for GDI using the knock sensor
  • Structure-borne sound analysis
